About Kaş
Kaş is the kind of place that travellers return to again and again, each time a little reluctant to leave. Built on a rocky promontory where the Taurus mountains tumble into a deep turquoise bay, this small Lycian town has resisted the large-scale resort development that has changed so much of Turkey's southern coast. Instead, it offers bougainvillea-draped whitewashed houses, a pedestrian harbour promenade, and a rhythm of life shaped more by the fisherman's tide table than by the tour operator's itinerary.
Kaş has a strong claim to being one of the best diving destinations in the Mediterranean. Underwater visibility regularly extends to depths that divers rarely encounter elsewhere; the seabed holds sunken aircraft, ancient amphorae, and natural caverns teeming with marine life. Reputable dive centres cater to everyone from complete beginners taking their first Discover Scuba session to highly experienced technical divers exploring deep-water wrecks.
Above the waterline, the ruins of ancient Antiphellos — Kaş' predecessor — are scattered among the modern town. A small Roman theatre survives in remarkable condition just minutes from the main square, while Lycian rock-cut tombs carved into the cliff face loom over the harbour. Day trips radiate outward in every direction: to the sunken city of Kekova by boat, to the great beach at Patara, to the troglodyte ruins of Myra at Demre, and along the beginning stretches of the famous Lycian Way long-distance trail.
Airport Transfer to Kaş
The journey from Antalya Airport to Kaş is a substantial one, winding along the most scenic stretch of Turkey's Mediterranean coast. A private transfer makes this journey as comfortable as possible, with an experienced driver who knows the route well and can point out highlights along the way.
The road passes through Finike, Demre, and the ancient ruins of Myra before descending to Kaş. The drive itself is part of the experience — dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden coves, and the gradual transition from Antalya's broad resort geography to the more intimate Lycian landscape.
Getting to Kaş
From Antalya Airport, Kaş is reached by heading west along the coastal highway. The route hugs the cliffs of the Lycian shore, passing bays and headlands of exceptional beauty. The drive is long by Turkish standards but consistently engaging, as the landscape grows more dramatic with every kilometre. Arriving in Kaş via the switchbacks above the town offers a memorable first view of the bay below.
Practical Tips for Visiting Kaş
Kaş is accessible year-round but the dive season and outdoor conditions peak between April and October. The town's small size means accommodation — particularly the sought-after boutique guesthouses — fills up very quickly in July and August; booking two to three months ahead is not excessive. Some of the best small properties have only four or five rooms and are perennially full in peak season.
ATM availability in Kaş is limited compared to larger resorts, so carrying some cash is wise. The harbour promenade and the lanes behind it have a good selection of restaurants and cafes, most of which are independently run. For dive equipment, all reputable centres provide full rental gear; bringing your own mask and fins is always appreciated but not necessary.
- Best diving visibility is April–October; water temperatures in this window are warm and current conditions most favourable.
- Book Kekova boat tours at least a day ahead in high season — they are popular and depart with limited capacity.
- Late October through early November is a beautiful and quiet time to visit; the sea is still swimmable and the town far more relaxed.
