About Alanya
Alanya is the easternmost of Antalya Province's major resort cities and, for many visitors, its most unforgettable. The town is built around and beneath a massive rocky promontory topped by a Seljuk-era castle whose walls descend dramatically to the sea on three sides — a skyline so distinctive that it features in every account of the Turkish Riviera. Arriving by road from the west, the castle appears gradually around a bend in the coast, growing in grandeur until the Red Tower comes into view at the water's edge and the full scale of the fortifications becomes apparent.
Cleopatra Beach, stretching west from the castle promontory, has a reputation for fine-grained sand and clear water that has long been internationally recognised. East of the castle lies Keykubat Beach, quieter and favoured by local residents; further east, the resort strip extends through Mahmutlar and Kestel, where high-rise apartments and affordable hotels serve a large community of European long-term visitors. The overall effect is of a complete, self-sufficient city where a holiday can unfold across days or weeks without exhausting the possibilities.
History runs deep in Alanya. Beyond the celebrated castle, the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) at the harbour is one of the finest examples of Seljuk military architecture anywhere in Turkey. The Damlataş Cave beside the beach has remarkable stalactites and stalagmites, as well as unusually high humidity said to benefit respiratory conditions. Dim Cave, reached by a short drive inland, is larger and arguably more dramatically formed. The Dim River valley, with its emerald pools and riverside restaurants, provides a green and shaded retreat from the coast.
Airport Transfer to Alanya
The transfer from Antalya Airport to Alanya is one of the longer journeys on the Turkish Riviera, but a private transfer makes it as comfortable and straightforward as possible. Experienced drivers take the coastal highway east, tracking the sea all the way with the castle appearing on the horizon as a sign that the journey is nearly complete.
For the return journey, the same reliable service is available. Simply provide your flight details and departure hotel to your transfer provider, and the logistics of reaching the airport comfortably will be arranged entirely on your behalf.
Getting to Alanya
From Antalya Airport, the road to Alanya follows the D400 east past Side and Manavgat before the landscape turns more dramatic — steeper cliffs, deeper bays, and the sea growing a deeper shade of blue. The castle first appears on the horizon well before you enter the town, its walls unmistakeable against the sky. The final approach descends into Alanya through the resort zones west of the centre, with the harbour and Red Tower serving as the ultimate orientation point.
Practical Tips for Visiting Alanya
Alanya has a long and vibrant season from April through November. July and August bring the maximum energy — Cleopatra Beach is packed, the nightlife is at full volume, and the castle receives its peak visitor numbers. For exploring the castle and historic sites, mornings and early evenings are far preferable to midday; the climb to the castle is steep and exposed, and the heat at the top in summer is formidable.
The eastern part of Alanya — Mahmutlar and Kestel — has a notably different character from the resort core, with a larger resident expat community and a more everyday urban feel. Dim Cave is best visited as a cool midday escape; the interior maintains a constant temperature regardless of outside conditions. Boat tours from the harbour are a popular way to see the castle sea caves and reach the Pirate's Cave, Pirates' Cave, and Phosphorus Cave that punctuate the cliff below the fortress.
- Visit Alanya Castle early in the morning to avoid heat at the top and to get the best panoramic light for photographs.
- Cleopatra Beach is most enjoyable before 10:00 or after 17:00 in July and August when it is less crowded.
- Dim Cave is a perfect midday retreat — its cool interior is a welcome contrast to the summer heat outside.
